TO All employees

FROM Isaac Dyer SUBJECT January editIon

DATE December 2

Hello, everyone.

Our January edition is always special because it sets the tone for our magazine for the rest of the year. I have already started working on the layout for our articles and features. The head reporters and I agreed that it would be good to have more interaction between our staff and readers next year. So, the January cover will be determined through a photography compestion that both our readers and employess can take part in. I’ve already sent out a press release to the local paper about it. I will also put up the contest rules and guidelines on our Web site by the end of the day.

As I mentioned, the competition will be open to employees. Unfortunately, this does not apply to our photographers as they would have an unfair advantage. However, I talked with Brianna Griffin, our lead photographer, and we decided that they can serve as contest judges. There is no prize other than the winning photo being featured on the cover.

I hope everyone takes part if they can. Please e-mail your submission to me by December 10. The winner will be announced on December 20.

Good luck!

Portland Valley Journal

Dorothy Hughes 11:57 A.M.   What about expanding our social media page?

Lenny Vogler 11:55 A.M.    Our social media page hasn’t been very successful in getting images of our products out there for consumers to see. Pictures really help in promoting our product lines.

Burl Seaver 11:58 A.M.   Perhaps we should start a Momento-Pic account. It’s a photo-sharing application people use to share and comment on pictures. It would also allow us to post links to our social media page.

Anya Pearson 11:59 A.M.    I’ve heard of that. But businesses have to pay a fee.

Lenny Vogler 11:59 A.M.   If the monthly fee is reasonable, it should be within our marketing budget. Should we go ahead and set up an account?

Burl Seaver 12:00 P.M.    We may also want to check out other popular image-sharing applications before we do that.

Dorothy Hughes 12:01 P.M.   I agree. There are other image-sharing programs that have even more subscribers than Momento-Pic.

Lenny Vogler 12:02 P.M.    I see. Well, could I get one of you to come up with a list of applications that could be beneficial to join? Please also find out about their fees and functions.

Anya Pearson 12:03 P.M.   I can take care of that right now. I’ll send you an e-mail with the information this afternoon.

Question 176 – 180 refer to the following article and memo.

Colfer Inc.’s FruitJuice Sales Dry Up

Beverage manufacturer Colfer Inc. experienced a 12 percent decline in fruit juice sales between July and September this year. According to company representative Fred Hines, multiple factors contributed to the decline in sales of these products, which typically account for over $500,000 of the company’s annual profits. “The summer was not as warm as normal, so fewer people bought our juices to cool down,” he said. “Furthermore, some of Colfer’s juice drinks rose in price due to an increase in the cost of ingredients. The price of grapes, for example, has gone up, so the manufacturing cost of our grape-flavored beverages has as well,” Mr. Hines explained.

An increase in competition has also affected Colfer Inc.’s sales. Colfer Inc. and other large companies are losing ground to smaller brands that offer healthier alternatives. In fact, research data has indicated that natural juices with no added sugar have been continually increasing in popularity. In an attempt to address changing consumer preferences, Colfer Inc. has begun establishing affiliations with a large number of fast-growing companies that make healthy foods and beverage. It has also replaced the blue bottles its fruit juices have long been packaged in with redesigned red ones. The company believes that this will help to change its brand image.

Date: November 30

I know that the last few months have been difficult, but I’m confident that we’re getting back on track. Our affiliation with Friendly Farm Foods and Natgreen Cereals has helped in this regard, but I think that Colfer Inc. will ultimately need to change with the times. Therefore, at our meeting this week, I’d like to discuss developing new flavors and expanding the price range of our products. Also, I think we need to reintroduce our original juice bottles as the new color and design have not been popular with consumers. Let’s focus on offering unique, high-quality products. That’s how we’ll meet our goals for the coning year.

Whal is the main purpose of the article?
A. To explain why consumer preferences are changing
B. To introduce a new manufacturing business
C. To announce the release of a new product line

Subject: Rental Property

Dear Ms. Bezark,

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me on the phone yesterday. As I mentioned, I am looking for an apartment in the Lakeview neighborhood with a lease starting December 1. My current apartment is approximately 1,200 square feet. I need a larger place with at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms. I would also prefer an apartment that is located on the first or second floor and has an assigned parking space.

I will be out of town on business for all of November, so I was hoping to see some apartments this month. My schedule is fairly flexible since I work from home as a freelance journalist. Please let me know what times and dates might work best for you.

Sincerely,

Ronald Hasbun

Mr. Hasbun,

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding available apartments. I have four properties in mind that I think might work for you. Below is a list of basic information about each one. One meets all of your requirements, while the others have a few of the aspects you requested. All except one are in your desired neighborhood. I included it on the list because it is the only property to have undergone a full renovation recently. It is a beautiful, old building in the Edgewater district.

If you are interested in touring one or more of these apartments, I can show them to you sometime next week.

I was excited when a friend invited me to visit the Winwright Gallery with her today. It was fascinating to watch a presentation and be shown techniques for making abstract art. I just wish it hadn’t been so crowded. We spent about two hours walking around and then dined at the restaurant in the new wing of the gallery. We sat on the patio, which has a view of the sculpture garden below. The food was excellent, and because my friend is a member, we even got a discount on our bill. Reservations are available but not necessary.

The Shannonville Department of Sanitation will be implementing major changes to the city’s recycling system. Starting next year, all homes and businesses will be issued two plastic bins; one blue and the other green.

   • All other types of materials will continue to be discarded with regular trash.

   • Pick-up of oversized items, such as furniture, appliances, tree or plant refuse, and electronics can be booked by calling a local recycling center. A fee of between $8 and $25 will be applied depending on the item(s) being recycled and the distance from the nearest recycling center.*

Staff from the Department of Sanitation will be dropping off bins before the end of the year. Should homes or businesses require more than one of each bin, they will be available for purchase at the city’s recycling centers for a cost of $18 per bin.

I recently saw a policy statement from the Shannonville Department ol Sanitation regarding changes to the city’s recycling system. I appreciate the attempt to make the process simpler, but I have a problem with one of the changes. Currently, residents can call a recycling center and arrange for pick-up of oversized items for a fixed fee of $8. For most of us, this is a reasonable price. However, some people will have to pay a lot more than that starting next year. In my view, the introduction of higher fees will negatively impact full-time students like me as well as many others with limited incomes. I hope your department and the city council will rethink this change before January.

Sincerely,

Arthur Wilmington

In response to concerns raised by community members about some of the changes to the city’s recycling policy, the Department of Sanitation has decided to make some further adjustments:

  1. Extra green recycling bins will be available for purchase at a cost of $14. Extra blue bins, because they must accommodate bigger items, will be sold in larger size for $16.

  2. We will charge a standard fee for all pick-ups of large items. However, there will be a modest increase to $15 per item to account for inflation and the rising cost of services.

  3. Seniors over 65 and full-time students* residing within city limits will be eligible for a 25 percent discount on recycling services and products.

These changes will go into effect on January 1.

* Applies to residents enrolled full-time in an adult educational program. A current student identity card will be required.

196.
What is NOT indicated about the recycling centers in Shannonville?
A. They offer a service exclusively for local residents.
B. They sell extra recycling containers.
C. They allow visits to be arranged by phone.
D. They can recommend facilities that handle large items.
